Papers pertaining to the case of Cowles v. Gleason and Cowles, 1796-1797.

Document (consisting of a gathering of three sheets) includes a certificate (1797 June 13) attesting that John Sandford Dart is a lawfully appointed justice of the peace and notary public. Certificate is signed by Charles Pinckney (Governor of South Carolina) and Stephen Ravenel (Secretary of State). Attached items include a list (1796) of "Questions respecting a part of the western Territory of the State of Georgia" prepared by [Phineas] Miller in Savannah (Ga.). Questions concern the navigability of rivers, the quality of the land, its suitability for cultivation, and how it compares "with the land in the Atlantic States generally." A list of answers (deposition) by Joseph Purcell, a South Carolina deputy surveyor, is notarized and certified by John Sandford Dart, who states that the deposition of Purcell was taken at the request of Elias Cowles of Farmington (Connecticut), plaintiff in the case of Cowles v. Gleason and Cowles.
